We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Alex Zanardi at the age of 59. His death marks the loss of an extraordinary athlete, competitor, and inspiration whose life and career left a lasting impact on both motorsport and Paralympic sport.
Zanardi enjoyed a distinguished racing career at the highest levels of motorsport. He was a two-time CART (IndyCar) champion with Chip Ganassi Racing and competed in Formula 1 for teams including Jordan, Minardi, Lotus, and Williams, taking part in 41 Grand Prix events. Known for his determination, skill, and fearless approach, he earned widespread respect throughout the racing community.
His life took a dramatic turn in 2001 following a devastating IndyCar crash that resulted in the amputation of both his legs. Rather than stepping away from competition, Zanardi demonstrated remarkable resilience, redefining his sporting career and inspiring millions around the world with his comeback.
He went on to achieve exceptional success as a Paralympic athlete, representing Italy and winning four gold medals and two silver medals across the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. His achievements in para-cycling became a powerful symbol of perseverance, strength, and the ability to overcome adversity.
In 2020, Zanardi suffered another serious setback when he was struck by a truck during a para-cycling relay in Tuscany, sustaining severe head injuries. He spent several years undergoing intensive medical treatment and rehabilitation.
His family confirmed his passing in a statement, saying: “It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Alessandro Zanardi, which occurred suddenly yesterday evening, 1 May. Alex passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family and friends.”
They also expressed gratitude for the support they have received and requested privacy as they mourn.
