Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant provided new details Friday morning regarding a shooting that occurred earlier in the week involving officers and a fleeing suspect, an incident that left one officer seriously injured and the suspect dead.
During a news conference held at police headquarters, Chief Bryant, joined by Mayor Andrew Ginther, addressed the circumstances surrounding the घटना and confirmed that body-camera footage had been released to the public. The briefing offered a clearer timeline of events and insight into the officer’s condition following the exchange of gunfire.
According to police, the situation began around 7:20 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Hamilton and Minnesota avenues, when an officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver reportedly fled the scene, prompting a search that led officers to the vehicle approximately 10 minutes later on East 18th Avenue.
Authorities say the suspect, identified as Chantez Loury, was later located on foot two blocks away near East 16th and Hamilton avenues. During the encounter, Loury allegedly opened fire on responding officers, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
One officer was struck twice during the incident, suffering significant blood loss due to a femoral artery injury. Fellow officers on the scene quickly rendered aid, applying a tourniquet before transporting the घायल officer to a nearby hospital, where emergency surgery was performed. Officials say the officer is expected to recover.
Loury, 38, was shot by multiple officers and later pronounced dead at 8:43 p.m., authorities confirmed.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has launched an independent investigation into the shooting. Meanwhile, city officials emphasized their support for the injured officer and reiterated their commitment to transparency as the case continues to unfold.
