Seven people have died following a devastating collision between a minibus taxi and a bus in Kariega, leaving the local community shaken. The crash involved a fully loaded minibus taxi transporting workers from KwaNobuhle into town and an Algoa Bus carrying only the driver.
According to the Eastern Cape Transport Department, the accident occurred when the taxi allegedly attempted a U-turn directly in front of the oncoming bus. The impact was severe, resulting in multiple fatalities at the scene and leaving several others injured.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and provided assistance to a total of eighteen people involved in the crash. Two individuals sustained serious injuries, while others suffered moderate to minor injuries. All injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals and medical facilities for further treatment.
Officials say the scale of the tragedy has deeply affected the Kariega community, particularly as many of the victims were workers commuting during their daily routine. The sudden loss of life has raised concerns about road safety and driver behavior in the area.
Authorities have since launched a full investigation to determine the exact circumstances leading up to the collision. Further details are expected as officials work to establish accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
