We remember and honor Los Angeles County Probation Department Detention Services Officer Michael Wall, who died in the line of duty on April 30, 2021, following a sudden medical emergency while serving at Central Juvenile Hall in Boyle Heights, California.
Officer Wall, 49, was a dedicated 14-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Probation Department, where he served with professionalism, courage, and an unwavering commitment to public safety. As a sworn peace officer under California Penal Code 830.5(a), he carried out his responsibilities with integrity and a deep sense of duty to both his colleagues and the youth under his supervision.
On the day of his passing, Officer Wall responded to a serious incident involving an assault on a minor within the facility. Demonstrating decisive action, he intervened to restrain a youth involved in the attack and then pursued additional individuals who attempted to flee the scene. During the foot pursuit across an open field, Officer Wall began experiencing medical distress. A fellow officer, recognizing the severity of his condition, caught him as he collapsed and prevented further injury.
Immediate life-saving efforts were initiated by personnel on scene, including CPR, and emergency medical services transported Officer Wall to a nearby hospital. Despite these efforts, he later passed away during surgery due to a heart attack.
Officer Wall is remembered for his bravery, dedication, and willingness to place the safety of others above his own. His actions on his final day reflect the same commitment to service that defined his entire career in probation work.
He is survived by his daughter and sisters, who, along with his colleagues and community, continue to honor his memory and sacrifice.
