A driver died following a one-vehicle crash in Wellesley on Thursday morning, according to local police.
Authorities said the incident occurred at approximately 11:18 a.m., when a woman flagged down a police officer near Washington Street by Glen Road. She reported a black SUV stopped in the middle of the roadway. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer found the driver unresponsive inside.
Emergency personnel from the Natick Fire Department responded to the scene and transported the driver to Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Despite medical efforts, the driver was pronounced dead.
Preliminary findings indicate the SUV was traveling eastbound on Washington Street when it left the roadway near Orchard Street. The vehicle then reentered the road before coming to a stop near 76 Washington Street. The circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation.
Police have not released the identity of the driver, pending notification of family members.
Authorities stated that the area surrounding the crash site was closed for an extended period to allow investigators to examine the scene and gather evidence. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while the investigation was underway.
Officials have not yet determined whether any additional factors contributed to the crash. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
